James Brougham - Collingham, nr Wetherby, Yorkshire England

posted Jan 16, 2011 12:35:14 by David Brougham
My search for the Broughams in the Wetherby and Collingham areas of North Yorkshire has come to a grinding halt with James Brougham Snr. We know that James Brougham Snr had a son by the name of James, born about 1839 in Collingham, died 1912 in Huddersfield. He married Jane Midwood (1842-1910) on 16 June 1862 in Huddersfield. It is this marriage certificate that subsequently identifies the father of James Jnr as being James Brougham.

I can not find any other trace of James Brougham Snr who was probably born between 1790 and 1820. Searches of census records and the GRO index have drawn a blank. I have also searched the The Parish register of Collingham 1579 - 1837, and the Parish Register of Kirk Deighton, 1600 - 1837, but again no trace.

If anyone is able to shed any light on James Brougham Snr, probably in North Yorkshire and around the Collingham / Wetherby area then I would be very interested in hearing from you.

i too am searching for a James Brougham b 1851. i believe educated in Trinity College in Dublin which makes me think he was not a catholic. he moved to Craughwell, County Galway in the west of Ireland in 1873, got married in a Catholic church to an Annie Fitzgerald and became principle of a Primary school. no mention of his family in the church records of the marriage .....i believe he may have had to convert to catholicism to get married and this may explain lack of info re his family.

i have not been able to make the link to Lord Brougham family but family folklore suggests it and the abundance of Peter, Henry, Michael in my family also tentatively points in this direction.

good work on the site ...
